"What A Way To Begin"
What better way to start off a brand new year than by almost killing someone?Allow me to explain.
We had our first ReGenesis rehearsal tonight. The church is off the Bedford Highway, which is a very busy street indeed. After the rehearsal, I was sitting at the church parking lot, waiting for a break in traffic so I could turn right and head home. I finally saw my break, and began to pull out onto the street when I saw a flicker of movement to my right through my passenger side window.
Seconds later there is a crash, and I look as a bicyclist, who I did not see (it was dark and he was wearing dark clothing) was smashed up against the passenger window. In what would have been a hilarious scene had I been observing it and not participating in it, his face smashed up against the window and he slid (yes, he fucking slid) slowly down the window before collapsing out of sight to the pavement with a thud that was audible from inside the car.
I halted halfway out onto the street and shut off the car, freaking out. My first thought was "Oh my God, I killed him!" I didn't know what to do. I opened the door and got out as he was stumbling to his feet. I apologized profusely, asked him if he was okay, and told him I didn't see him.
Our guitar player and his father were in the car behind me, and his dad jumped out and came to check on the bicyclist to see if he was injured badly. I remained frozen halfway out my door. The bicyclist turned to me and gestured for me to go. Keith's dad nodded at me and I jumped into the car and got the fuck out of there.
He was driving on the sidewalk in the evening with dark clothing and no lights or reflectors of any kind. Legally I did nothing wrong, but that's small consolation for the scare I went through. It's not like I zoomed out in front of him, I was well on my way out onto the street when he drove off the sidewalk and smashed into me (according to Keith).
So, at least he's not dead.
That would have sucked.
